-
First
and foremost, NEVER leave a burning candle unattended.
The same goes for incense.
-
Never burn a candle in
a container that is cracked, chipped or scratched. The wax inside
gets hot and could cause the container to break. At best you'll
have a waxy mess all over the place -- at worst, you could start a
fire.
-
Place your container candle
on a heat-resistant, dry surface such as a hot pad or trivet. Insure
that your candle is well away and out of reach of children and pets.
As always, insure as well that the candle is well away from drapery
and other flammable objects.
-
Keep lit candles out of
drafts.
-
Never allow the flame
to directly touch the container. Keep the wick trimmed to 1/4"
and centered. You can use an old pencil to straighten the wick should
it start to droop to the side in the molten wax. We find it best and
easiest to trim the wick to 1/4" before lighting when the wax
is hard. Be sure to dump the wick trimming out before lighting.
-
The sides and the bottom
of the container often become hot. Handle the container carefully
if you absolutely need to do so. It's best to let the wax cool before
moving the container.
-
When the wax burns down
to the last 1/4" or 1/2", discontinue use of the candles.
This will prevent possible heat damage to the surface of your counter
or furniture. This will also prevent the container from breaking due
to the intense heat generated from the metal wick tab at the bottom
of the candle. This tab gets very hot when the flame from the wick
heats it.
-
Always extinguish the
candle before replacing the lid
-
A good rule of thumb is
to burn your container for a minimum of one hour per inch diameter
of the candle you are burning. This will allow the flame to melt the
wax to the very edge of the container and will consume all the wax
as the candle burns down. The diameter of the candle should be measured
at it's largest point, not at the throat of the container.
-
It's
worth repeating -- NEVER leave a burning candle unattended.
